Answering the road safety call

With traffic accidents on the rise and roads becoming increasingly dangerous, due to the sheer amount of traffic, Road Safety Week couldn’t come soon enough. In a bid to highlight the importance of sight tests for safer driving, the Optical Confederation (OC) has teamed up with the charity ‘Brake’ to launch a campaign to urge the optical community in the UK to show their support. Lesley Cree Opticians have signed up to help create awareness of the campaign.

An estimated 2900 road casualties are caused by poor vision each year. The theme for 2016 is “Make the Brake Pledge” which focuses on simple elements that will make our roads safer. Having sharp vision is being highlighted as a vital check for drivers.

As part of their support for the campaign Lesley Cree Opticians will take part in a number of initiatives to raise the awareness of the importance of eye tests for safer driving, including displaying the OC and Brake poster which displays the message “Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre, Eye Test” in the display window.

Lesley and the team will also continue to advise their patients on the importance of regular eye tests and encouraging patients to wear their glasses or contact lenses whilst behind the wheel of a car or riding a motorbike.

Commenting, Lesley Cree said “We are regularly faced with patients who are completely unaware that they have been driving illegally due to their eyesight not reaching the required minimum standards. It is everyone’s responsibility as a road user to make sure that when we journey onto the road, that not only are our vehicles road legal but also that our eyesight is road legal. Something as simple as an eye test or wearing a pair glasses could be the difference between saving someone’s life or not.”

If you feel like you need to get your eyes tested or are in need of a new pair of glasses or contact lenses that are fit for purpose, then please don’t hesitate to get in contact with Lesley Cree Opticians to book an appointment with one of our skilled and knowledgeable optometrists.
