A recent report from The College of Optometrists has revealed an alarming truth: only 30% of children regularly wear sunglasses in sunny weather—despite 42% of parents doing so themselves. Even more worrying, over half of parents admit they don’t ensure their children wear UV-protective sunglasses at all.
Why It Matters
Children’s eyes are particularly vulnerable to UV damage. With larger pupils and clearer lenses, they allow more ultraviolet radiation to reach the retina, increasing the risk of long-term eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration later in life.
Yet many parents are still unaware of this danger or believe that a sunhat alone offers sufficient protection. The combination of a wide-brimmed hat and certified sunglasses can reduce UV exposure to the eyes by up to 98%.
The Dangers of Buying Sunglasses Online
A new investigation by Which?, reported by the Association of Optometrists, has exposed just how risky it can be to purchase sunglasses from unregulated online sellers.
Of the 20 pairs of children’s sunglasses tested:
- Nine failed safety standards
- Some lenses provided no UV protection at all
- Several were even found to be illegal for sale in the UK
These findings are a stark reminder that not all sunglasses offer real protection—and some may even do more harm than good by causing the pupils to dilate behind dark lenses, letting in more harmful UV rays.
What to Look For in Children’s Sunglasses
When shopping for sunglasses, especially for children, it’s essential to check:
- CE or UKCA marking– a legal requirement showing compliance with British and European UV safety standards
- UV400 protection – blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays
- Category 3 lenses– ideal for strong sunlight
- Wraparound frames– offer better protection from side exposure
- Comfort and fit– to encourage children to wear them regularly
Remember: darker lenses don’t automatically mean better protection—what matters is the UV filter rating.
Regular Eye Exams Still Overlooked
While many parents prioritise back-to-school uniforms, only 40% book an eye test for their child, despite the vital role these checks play in monitoring overall eye health and development.
