Dry Eye, Blepharitis and MGF

Dry eye is a common condition particularly as we age. It occurs when there is insufficient volume and/or quality of tears to keep the surface of the eye (cornea) sufficiently lubricated.

It is caused by age, poor diet, dehydration, menopause, air conditioning, increased screen use, certain medications or systemic disease.

Signs include watery eyes, sandy/gritty eyes, stinging/burning eyes or redness.

Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelids and is caused by a build-up of bacteria on the eyelid margin or as a complication of some skin conditions (Seborrhoeic dermatitis, Rosacea).

Symptoms include crusty/irritated eyelid margins, red/swollen/inflamed eyelids, gritty eyes, scales at the base or the eyelash

Establishing daily lid hygiene is key to the management of Blepharitis.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic condition caused by the blockage of the secretory meibomian glands which produce the lipid layer of the tear film. This results in reduced lipid quantity and quality causing dry, gritty, itchy, poorly lubricated eyes which may cause smeary vison.

Causes of MGD include Age related Meibomian Gland Fall-out, Poor diet, dehydration, infrequent blinking, some medications.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD occurs when there is a breakdown of the macula (a small area at the back of your eye that is responsible for your detailed central vision) which prevents it from working properly. This leads to problems with your central vision and can make everyday tasks like reading, driving and recognising faces difficult.

Causes include; age (being over 50), genetics, gender (more common in females), smoking, poor diet, UV exposure.

Symptoms might include; difficulty in reading small print even with glasses, straight lines (like a door frame) appearing wavy/distorted, poorer vision in low light/darkness.

Treatment and Management

Treatment for wet AMD may consist of intra-vitreal injections of drugs (Aylea, Lucentis, Avastin) or a light treatment called photodynamic therapy.

There is no specific treatment for Dry AMD, but living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the progression of the disease. Stop smoking, eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, keep UV out of your eyes by wearing good quality sunglasses, take a supplement containing Lutein.

Actase Lutein ZA a scientifically formulated eye health supplement based on AREDS II formulations for AMD. It contains optimum levels of Lutein(10mg), Zeaxanthin(2mg), Astaxanthin(2mg), and VitC and E to protect cells from oxidative stress, Zinc and Copper to help maintain healthy vision; one a day.
