Jeans for Genes Day

Friday 18 September was officially the day we could all wear jeans to work and not get in to trouble!

Yes – it was ‘Jeans for Genes’ day, an occasion when everyone can wear Jeans for the day wherever they are, as long as they pay a £2 donation to charity.

The money raised from ‘Jeans for Genes’ day supports Genetic Disorders UK, the national charity dedicated to supporting families affected by genetic disorders. The companies and organisations that take part are helping to fund a range of initiatives that improve the quality of life of children and families affected by genetic disorders.

There are between 4,000 and 6,000 diagnosed genetic disorders and it is estimated that one in 25 children is affected by a genetic disorder. Some genetic disorders are apparent at birth while others are diagnosed at different stages throughout childhood, and sometimes into adulthood.

Many of these genetic defects also affect our eyes. Over the past 15 years, ongoing research has meant that nearly 500 genes have been identified that contribute to inherited eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, strabismus, corneal dystrophies and a number of forms of retinal degenerations.

The team at Lesley Cree made donations to wear jeans and a white commemorative T-shirt and as you can see, really enjoyed wearing jeans to work!
