Lesley Cree educates Rainbows girls about eye care

Independent Optician Lesley Cree recently met with members of a local Rainbows group to raise awareness for the importance of looking after your eyesight.

Rainbows is the youngest section of GirlGuiding in the UK, and is aimed girls between the ages of 5-7. It is designed to teach the youngsters about the environment and the world around them. They explore everyday science through an array of adventurous activities, taken from various cultures around the world.

As part of her talks Lesley discussed the importance of having regular eye tests, even if the children weren’t experiencing any negative symptoms. With summer fast approaching, she also taught the young girls about the effects of powerful UV Rays and how they could protect themselves on hot sunny days by wearing the correct headwear and sunglasses.

In addition, Lesley also encouraged the girls to challenge the stigma of wearing glasses by explaining the process of undergoing an eye test and that wearing glasses should be nothing to be embarrassed about. Highlighting that with so many types of frame styles, colours and lenses to choose from, glasses are now seen as a fashion accessory, with that many people now buying frames with plain glass lenses to look cool!

Commenting, Lesley added, “I always enjoy the opportunity to talk to the younger generation about the importance of looking after their eyes. Children are more likely to receive dangerous exposure from UV Rays, due to the fact they have larger pupils and clearer lenses which let in more light, so the younger these children understand the dangers, the more chance they have to protect themselves.”
