Lesley Cree Opticians Supports Vital Research into Headlight Glare

National Road Safety Week | Lesley Cree Opticians

Night-time headlight glare has become a significant concern for drivers, particularly older individuals, leading many to avoid driving after dark due to safety risks.

Recognising the impact of this issue, the government has commissioned much-needed research following advocacy efforts by The College of Optometrists and its supporters, including Lesley Cree Opticians.

Headlight Glare: A Growing Concern

The rise of brighter LED headlights and the increasing prevalence of larger SUV-style vehicles are contributing to discomfort for night-time drivers. These vehicles’ elevated headlights often shine directly into the eyes of oncoming drivers, exacerbating the problem.

A 2023 survey by The College of Optometrists revealed that 76% of UK drivers experience night-time headlight glare as a concern.

Research to Address the Issue

The Department for Transport (DfT) has enlisted the Transport Research Foundation (TRF) to lead a project that will run from October 2024 to Spring 2025. Using a specially equipped vehicle, the research will measure light levels experienced during real-life driving situations, taking into account:

  • Other vehicles on the road
  • Weather conditions
  • Ambient lighting

The findings will guide actionable recommendations to tackle headlight glare, with input from The College of Optometrists and other stakeholders. This collaborative approach aims to influence international standards and improve safety for all road users.
