At Lesley Cree we have always advocated that eye health has some direct correlations and implications related to the propensity of developing other diseases.
We were therefore very interested to read an article published by the AOP in Optometry Today concerning a study that has been conducted in the USA in which researchers examined the relationship between cataract surgery and an individual’s risk of developing dementia.
The study, which was published in JAMA Internal Medicine, involved analysing data from more than 3000 people aged 65 or older who were free from dementia at the outset of a longitudinal study.
All 3038 participants received a diagnosis of cataract or glaucoma before enrolment in the study or during follow up appointments.
During the study, these participants had a cataract extraction operation and this was associated with a 29% reduction in the risk of developing dementia.
Commenting Lesley Cree said, “Whilst the authors highlighted that further studies are warranted it underlines the need to have regular eye health assessments. As with a number of other eye conditions, early treatment can not only prevent loss of eyesight, it can also help avoid other diseases from developing. As Optometrists with the responsibility of providing the best visual solutions we have an important role to play in dementia prevention.”
She added, “This is another reason why we invested in the Optos Monaco eye scanner and our practice allows an extended appointment time of 45 minutes. This additional time enables the optometrist to gain a more holistic view of our patients health and wellbeing and consider these alongside any issues related to their eyesight.”
