Radcliffe optician sponsors transatlantic cyclist

Radcliffe on Trent Opticians Lesley Cree has sponsored local cyclist and Dad of three boys, Martin Cox who is taking part in the Transatlantic cycle race.

Martin departed on Saturday 9 August to race 2,000 miles from Westminster Bridge in London to Istanbul. He must pass through three check points on the way in France, Italy and Montenegro but other than that, the racers get to determine their own route and must be completely unsupported for the two week journey!

In completing the event, Martin is hoping to raise money for sightsavers.org, a charity that wants to eliminate avoidable blindness and get equality for people with disabilities. Lesley Cree have donated a pair of Mark Cavendish Oakley sunglasses which will protect his eyes whilst he completes his race.

The rules for the transatlantic cycle race are also deceptively simple: Riders must ride from the start point to the finish point and visit all mandatory controls en-route.Third party support is prohibited and all food, drink and equipment must be carried by the rider or acquired en-route. All forward land travel must be human powered although ferries are permitted for expedient coast to coast travel, by approval of the Race Director. Each rider is responsible for maintaining positional updates and evidence thereof, but if they go three days without contact and their race is over!

Last year Martin cycled three days and covered 1,000 miles to make a surprise visit to see his wife Anda in Latvia, so he is fairly confident that he will complete the race despite currently being in the middle of studying for an MBA!
