Transforming Eye Care for Older People: New AOP Resource Highlights the Vital Role of Optometry

At Lesley Cree Opticians, we understand just how important good eye care is as we age. That’s why we’re supporting a new initiative from the Association of Optometrists (AOP), which shines a spotlight on the critical role optometry can play in improving the lives of older people.

The AOP has launched a new online resource, “Transforming eye care for older people for better health,” aimed at reducing inequalities in care and improving outcomes for our ageing population. The resource offers a clear framework to guide policymakers, setting out practical steps to alleviate pressure on the NHS while supporting better health for older people.

The AOP is calling for five simple but impactful policy changes that would enable optometrists to offer more support to older patients. These changes aim to improve services, enhance quality of life, and reduce the strain on busy GP surgeries, A&E departments, and hospitals.

Here’s a quick look at the five key recommendations:

  1. Let optometrists certify vision impairment. This would help patients more easily access financial support and other services.
  2. Ensure Low Vision Services are available nationwide. Everyone should be able to access specialist support, no matter where they live.
  3. Make domiciliary eye care easier to provide. Optometrists need more support to offer home visits to those who can’t travel to a practice.
  4. Include vision checks in frailty and falls assessments. Regular eye tests could help prevent falls and improve overall wellbeing.
  5. Use optometrists more in public health and disease prevention. From spotting early signs of diabetes to detecting eye diseases, optometrists are uniquely placed to support wider health initiatives.

At Lesley Cree Opticians, we’re proud to be part of a profession that plays such a vital role in keeping our communities healthy, especially as they grow older. We welcome this important call to action and encourage our patients, partners, and local policymakers to learn more.
