Why Regular Eye Tests Matter for Children: New National Campaign Shines a Light on Kids’ Eye Health

Eye Care for Children

At Lesley Cree Opticians, we know that good vision is vital for a child’s development, learning, and confidence. That’s why we’re proud to support a new public awareness campaign, led by The College of Optometrists, ABDO (Association of British Dispensing Opticians), and OSA (Optical Suppliers Association), which aims to encourage parents across the UK to prioritise regular eye tests for their children.

Confused About When to Book a Test? You’re Not Alone

The campaign, launching later this month, is informed by insightful new research conducted with over 1,000 Mumsnet users – the UK’s largest parenting community. It reveals a mixed picture when it comes to parents’ understanding of childhood eye health:

  • Many are unsure when their child should first have an eye test
  • Some don’t know how often these checks should be carried out
  • There’s confusion about where to go for help with children’s vision problems
  • Awareness of conditions like child myopia (short-sightedness) is low

So, When Should Children Have Their Eyes Tested?

The College of Optometrists recommends children have their eyes tested every 1–2 years from around the age of 3 or 4, unless advised differently by an optometrist. These early checks are essential – they can identify issues that may affect a child’s learning and development and help manage any conditions before they become more serious.

As Dr Gillian Rudduck, President of The College of Optometrists, explains:

“Being able to see clearly is critical for children’s overall development, and going for regular eye tests is essential to ensure that children can see as well as possible and to detect and manage any eye conditions.”
