Results show almost 20% of Britons fear the opticians

A recent survey conducted on UK citizens reported that 17% of people fear attending a sight test at the opticians. However, this figure is lower than the 24% who said they feared the GP and well below the 34% of people who said they feared the dentist.

The survey questioned 2000 adults and was performed by Southport based medical negligence and serious injury law specialists ‘Fletchers Solicitors’.

The study found that 69% of participants who took part in the survey said that the number one reason for avoiding the opticians was through a fear of uncovering an undetected health condition.

A phobia of medical devices and procedures was deemed as the second most common reason within 52% of people and 14% of the respondents said that fear of a painful experience was the reason they avoided the opticians.

Interestingly however, of all the applicants who responded, 76% said that their fear originated from childhood and has continued to affect them into their adult lives.

Commenting, Lesley Cree said “This study was incredibly enlightening as it gives Opticians around the country a fantastic insight into the thought processes of their customers. Most surprisingly however was to read how many people feared the opticians on the back of a traumatic childhood experience. This just proves that as Opticians we must continue to educate the younger generation on the benefits of receiving regular eye health checks. We also need to continue to deliver an enjoyable experience so that so as they enter adulthood their fear of visiting an Optician will be eradicated.”

Lesley Cree Opticians over the years has developed a fantastic reputation for providing its patients with the very best level of customer care and is it this reason why our patients return to us again and again.
